The first stop in the Golden Mall Xi’an Famous Foods. While they now have multiple outposts in the city, there’s something special about going to the one that started it all. This shop still feels like it’s a secret, unlike the others which are very well known.
The foods at Xi’an are much like the province itself, a combination of Chinese and Middle Eastern influences.
The dish that I ordered, one of their most famous, consisted of delicious sliced lamb, doused in a hot chile and cumin spiced oil. The combination of cabbage, scallions and celery make for unique flavors that you’re not used to seeing in Chinese restaurants. The dish had a meaty, bolognese essence to it, and was brilliantly paired with hand pulled noodles that the restaurant is best known for. Rough, thick broad noodles have a wonderful toothsome quality . Much of which comes from the fact that they were made a few minutes before being added to your dish. At $6 a plate, this is an amazing bargain.
